Redefining the Defined!

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to look over this post. The reason I feel like I need to take some time to explain this is because I use different classifications for tarantulas then what is traditionally used. I have three separate classifications for tarantulas which I will now define for you.

Arboreal - Tarantulas who will remain in the leaf matter and trees for their entire life. They rarely adventure to the floor of their enclosure and often have feathering in their front feet. This is to help soften their fall if they fall or jump. They will make web tunnels in the foliage or make a home within a hollow cork bark.

Fossorial - This would be a tarantula who will spend its live digging or on the ground. They often do not venture up and are fuller bodied then arboreal tarantulas. There is a debate if there should be a separate classification for burrowing tarantulas and tarantulas that will dig out of necessity but not always. I think this is a little silly because in the keeping relm they will generally require the same set up.

Lowland - These are tarantulas that will burrow and climb. From what I have seen these tarantulas will create tunnels of web and surround them with dirt going up an anchor point in their enclosure. These tarantulas will require a hybrid set up that has more substrate then an arboreal as well as more space for them to climb.

Not every tarantula is the same, but we still want to offer them with the most accurate enclosure we can. I think it is a missed opportunity to include the lowland classification as it is a fairly important distinction. Always make sure you are doing your research regarding your animals and ask questions of whom ever you are buying from if you are not sure.

Thanks for reading and happy adventuring!
